Mihanovic finds his motifs by wandering among the islands of the Croatian coast on his boat that serves as a mobile atelier. It is primarily thanks to the boat that he can access the places that inspire and provide him with the themes of his paintings. This live encounter with his motifs is the most important moment in the process of creating a painting. In order to assist his memory, Mihanovic, like all artists throughout history, makes sketches and watercolors of the images he wishes to capture.
